Seattle is one of the nation's premiere bicycle riding cities. We consistently make the top 5 and 10 lists put out by biking publications; have the biggest bicycling organization in the U.S. (Cascade Bicycle Club, see below); and have one of the longest urban bike trails in the country (Burke-Gilman, see below).
Bicycling is well supported both by the City of Seattle and King County. There are numerous trails, paved and unpaved, short and long, on-road and mountain-biking, throughout the region. Below are some of the area's most popular bicycling spots.
BURKE-GILMAN/SAMMAMISH RIVER TRAIL
Seattle's best-known trail. 27 miles, from Ballard on the western edge of Seattle to Marymoor Park on the east side.
ALKI BEACH
One of Seattle's best beaches, with a great view across the water of downtown. Several miles of paths popular with bicyclists and roller bladers.
MYRTLE EDWARDS PARK - ELLIOT BAY TRAIL
On the north end of downtown, this trail offers spectacular views west to the Olympics and south to Mt. Ranier. Starting at Myrtle Edwards park, the trail follows the water for 2 miles or so, passes through an industrial area, finally curving around back to the water, for a total ride of 4+ miles each way.
GREENLAKE
Even though it's already mentioned on the Parks page, we'd be remiss to not include Greenlake in the Bicycling page. One of Seattle's most popular destinations rain or shine, Greenlake has 2.8 miles of dedicated "wheels only" bike paths. There's access to even more bike trails, paved and dirt, in Woodland Park, adjoining Greenlake to the west.
